2014 LaCie USB 3.0 Thunderbolt and the new MacB...

Deciphering the differences between port types is, as usual, like deciphering ancient Greek, and lots of Googling has not clarified. I own a 2014 LaCie "USB 3.0 Thunderbolt" hard drive (Amazon.com: (OLD MODEL) LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series 1TB External Hard Drive (9000294): Computers & Accessori…) with two ports: a micro-B USB port, and a DisplayPort-style Thunderbolt port. I'm wondering if this hard drive is truly capable of the 40 Gbps speeds the current MacBook Pros support with their "Thunderbolt 3" USB-C ports.

So the question is: which (if not both) of these two ports will be capable of those maximum speeds to take advantage of my new MacBook Pro (via a micro-B- or DisplayPort-to-USB-C cable), or do I need to invest in a new external hard drive with higher capabilities?

Hi,

If it does not have a T3/USB-C port, then it does not support 40Gbps speeds.

That's pretty definitive. Thanks. (Though I should note that it appears when dealing with hard drives, even if the port speed is great you'll be limited by the read speed of the hard drive as well.)

You're welcome.
