How to get files back reorganized on Desktop?

Somehow my desktop got cleaned out. Now all my files are haphazard on my drive.

The files are still on my computert but they're no longer on my desktop in nice folders and organized. My desktop is bare, empty. I have the files but now I have to search and dig through when I had my stuff organized by topic, work, class, etc. What happened and how can I get my folders and files in organized folders back again?

I'm cooped up in flood waters and need to get caught up on work and school and it's a freaking needle in a haystack tedious task trying to fine each file I need when it was JUST on the desktop.
