why are folder "dates modified" being updated?

I noticed that folder dates are being modified for no apparent reason.  This is happening after I migrated from 10.10.5 to 10.12.6.  The folders involved are in my music library, myMusic, which is external to the iTunes library. The modfication dates of immediate subfolders of myMusic - the ones that represent artists -  are being modified.  No lower level subfolders (which represent albums) are affected and no files (.mp3, .m4a).  These files all have correct, pre-migration dates modified.  I checked the subtrees of a few affected artist folders, and the only file I find updated since the migration (10 days ago) is the artist folder .DS_Store file.  With one exception, none of these files or folders has been touched by me, nor have I played music from within them!

I checked my backups from before installing Sierra, and the problem is not present in the backups.  Also, I keep my OS in one partition and data, including myMusic,  in a separate partition of my laptop's hard drive.  Let's call the partitions SYS and DATA respectively.  These partitions have not been changed by me.  (I presume the Sierra installed fiddled with SYS, but not portions of DATA.)

Finally, I do NOT ask iTunes to keep my media folder organized, and I do NOT ask iTunes to copy files to the media folder when adding them to the library.  For the sake of completeness, let me mention that iTunes seems to have forgotten my Recently Played history from before the migration.

Finally - to regrettably complicate matters - I have seen this behavior with a few other folders (i.e., not part of my media folder).  However, these other folders are all associated with managing some external device, such as a Zoom foot pedal, or a scanner program.

Updating the artist folder date modified field is very inconvenient for me, because I rely on date stamps to search and otherwise manage my 100+ GB music library.
