mac mail reply icon disappears

Since the beginning of this month (September) the reply icon in Mac Mail disappears after a period: i.e. it shows up and then after a few hours it is no longer there!! Nothing has changed, no updates, no crashes. Incidentally, whilst searching for an answer,  I found a similar post I made on the same subject in September 2012. A while after that, it corrected itself and until this week when I noticed what was happening, it has been OK! Any ideas?
