Apps/programs no longer open in new desktop

Up until recently, when opening up programs (such as Chrome or MS Word), they would open up in a new desktop and I didn't have the taskbar showing at the bottom unless I hovered over it. Suddenly, all my programs are only opening up in my main desktop window and the taskbar is continuously visible. I've looked under my preferences and nothing appears to be changed. Can anyone please help?
