Can you turn off iCloud Drive without losing data?
I enabled iCloud drive but then discovered through some articles that one should not enable iCloud Drive until Yosemite comes out and all of one's devices are running iOS8 and Yosemite on their computes. Since enabling iCloud Drive I am missing Photostream and Pages docs that I had on my phone and god knows what else. When I went to try and turn off iCloud Drive (so I can then wait until Yosemite comes out before I re-enable iCloud Drive), I get the following message:
"Are you sure you want to turn off iCloud Drive? Some changes have not been uploaded to iCloud. If you turn off iCloud Drive, these changes will be lost." Immediately below that message is a red message that says "Delete from iPhone."
What exactly would be deleted from my phone if I turn off iCloud Drive? What changes does the message refer to? Why can't I just return my phone from iCloud Drive to the regular Cloud so I can access my Photostream and my Pages data? And why on earth did Apple not alert us to the issues we would face with iOS8 if we install BEFORE Yosemite comes out? This is so frustrating!
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Teresa
I am in exactly the same position. Has anyone at Apple got an answer to this?
I would love to hear that Apple has remedied this problem. From other discussion strings that I am following related to this issue, it seems thus far we remain out of luck. I did discover that if I log onto iCloud.com I can access my files that way. Still, what a pain.
When I got the message re iCloud Drive as I was setting up my phone after the update to iOS8, it said I wouldn't be able to access my files unless all of my devices were running iOS8 OR Yosemite. That message was misleading as it really should have said all devices need to be running iOS8 AND your mac needs to be running Yosemite, as it was not an "either or" situation. So frustrating...
Once iCloud Drive has been activated and your account upgraded you can not return to the previous method. Did you also turn iCloud Photo Library on?
Yes, I do have my iCloud Photo Library on. I seem to be getting my photos now so that is not an issue for me but I am frustrated by my inability to access my files on Pages now that I have iCloud Drive. I do understand that there is no going back once iCloud Drive is activated and that I am stuck in limbo waiting until Yosemite is out before I can return to the wonderful syncing I was accustomed to using. Would have been nice if Apple had released Yosemite at the same time as iOS8 since for many, Yosemite is directly related to iOS8 functionality with re iCloud Drive. Sigh...
You probably have iCloud Photo Library and Photostream turned on, they both work together but you can't see the content of the iCloud Photo Library without iCloud Drive activated. So not at all on Mavericks, or IOS7)
And yes, the scheduling could have been better, this is a bit of a mess.
Yes, I agree. I was updating my iPad to IOS8, there ought to have been a waring not to enable iCloud Drive until Yosemite was available, or as you say, release the two at the same time.
Hi,
I am literraly in the middle of upgrading from iOS8 to iOS9 on my 1st generation iPad Mini. As far as I know I have not signed up t iCloud Drive but only iCloud. Before I can get back in my iPad I have to chose between 2 options:
Option 1: "Upgrade to iCloud Drive"
- This implies I do not have iCloud Drive.
- I know that use iCloud I am unsure aboiut iCloud Drive.
Option 2: "Turn off iCloud Drive "
- This implies I already have iCloud Drive.
- And also that I stand risk losing data in either iCloud or iCloud Drive.
Thanks all help much appreaciated. It really is hard to come by. Thanks
How can you not know, either you turned it on, or you didn't.
Go to iCloud on the web and look, why guess.
In future when you turn things on write yourself a note.
Clearly there is information presented by the device which suggests that both iCloud Drive can be active or inactive. There is also information contradict each state. Hence the questions I asked previously.
Why am I given the option to "Turn off iCloud Drive" if its not on?
Are there any posible negative rammifications when selecting this option?
I am suggesting that (as you can't remember whether you turned it on or not) that you check, if you do not feel inclined to check you will have to guess.
There are 2 possible results
1. It's off . Nothing will happen
2. It's on . Everything uploaded to the iCloud drive (if anything) from your Mac will be deleted from your Mac, but will still be on the iCloud drive.
Me, I prefer to check but if your choice is not to check, carry on.

Not if you did not activate it. I was presented with the same selection, and had never activated it. It goes right on by and my devices are working just like they were. I've not lost any content, since I did not have any content there.
How can I check and know for sure if iCloud Drive has been activated or not?
Thanks
Open System Preferences>iCloud and see if the switch is Green (on) or white (off)
iCloud Drive is unchecked on my Mac, (I don't have access to my iPad mini due the update). Does this mean if I select "Turn off iCloud Drive" on my iPad all my data on my iPad, Mac and in the cloud will be safe – Nothing would be deleted?
Thanks.
