Macbook screen only works (screen actually work...

A few weeks ago my computer started having random screens show up (sometimes colored vertical lines sometimes colored horizontal lines), but I could hear my computer working in the background, meaning it would alert when I got emails or air drops. So I connected it to an HDMI cable and now it works - the screen of my macbook actually works when it's connected, not just the external monitor works. I need help fixing this screen issue, if anyone has any ideas please let me know!
