An error occurred while communicating with the ...

I received the above message only after updating to Sierra. Image capture worked fine previously but now I can't use it! I have gone to the Epson support website and they say that my printer/scanner is compatible with Sierra, is there an updated driver that hasn't come from Apple yet (Epson drivers come through as part of the Apple update process!)

Any suggestions please.

Try links on my tip for El Capitan to check for Epson download links

Mine is suffering the same problem. I have found that Epson's own scanner software will work but this is no help if you use a 3rd party application to perform scanning, especially as the Epson software fails to OCR PDF!

I will never buy Epson again!

xxMikeBxxx but not particularly helpful! My Epson software works fine and scans to PDF. My issue is not with the Epson software per se but with the 'Image Capture' application which only shows this error message since the upgrade to macOS Sierra!

Sorry a brody but I can't find anything in your tip that helps resolve the issue, any other suggestions?

@cglover2 - My post is helpful in so far as it confirms the issue is widespread! Also as I pointed out the Epson scanner software can produce PDF files but fails to OCR the content, unlike my last Canon or HP multifunction. This is a serious omission on Epson's part. However, in this case the bug looks like it is an Apple issue so we have to wait for them to fix it, as I am told by Epson they have nothing to do with the Apple drivers (although I find that hard to believe).

@a brody - Sorry, that link is not helpful.

After a lot of trying many things I now have it working again! As I tried so many things I am not 100% sure about the actual fix only that it needed a lot of work! However, try the following:

Turn off your printer.

Delete the printer in System Preferences.

Delete any software relating to the printer/scanner you installed. (Printer/scanner manufacturers own software.)

In Finder select your hard drive and go to Library - Printers - PPDs - Contents - Resources and delete the files for your printer. Also delete the file with your printers name under Library - Printers. Also look under Library - Image Capture - Devices and delete your scanner.

Now reboot you Mac but enter recovery mode (Command + R) and use the option to re-install Sierra. Once complete and you are logged back shut down and perform a NVRAM (PRAM) reset and a SMC reset. When complete turn on your printer/scanner again. Now add the printer/scanner from System Preferences. It will take longer than normal as it will need to download the drivers from Apple. Now see if it works. Mine needed one extra re-boot before it sprung back into life!

Seems complicated. I just reinstalled the Epson driver, which worked for me. Downloaded here: https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/XP-Series/Epson-XP-420/s/SPT_C11C D86201

So folks looking at this thread for answers should try that first.

I had this problem on Sierra and I spent many hours trying to figure it out.  It finally turned out that my network settings were the cause of the problem.  I had an old "search domain" listed on my TCP/IP settings.  Once I removed that and made sure everything else was clean, this problem went away.  If you use WiFi and/or a network cable, make sure you check each and every network connection inside the network settings to make sure you don't have any weird or old search domains.  I can't believe this cause a problem with the scanner but still allowed the printer to work fine.  This was driving me nuts - I even re-installed Sierra over the top of my old install and it didn't fix it.  Now it's perfect.

I also do not have any of the Epson software or drivers installed.  Only the Apple stuff that comes with the OS.

I was able to fix this error with step one only (Turn off and turn on printer). After that, no issues scanning with Sierra.

Really simple solution! I had the same problem and could not resolve therefore contacted Canon who were useless, then contacted Apple who advised me to turn my router off and on. Sorted! Problem solved, I can now scan. Thank you Paul G at Apple.
