Apple watch face detached from watch

I've seen a few questions posted here about this issue, but not any clear responses. Last weekend my Apple Watch Series 2 watch face cracked completely around the edge where it meets the aluminum case and detached, hanging from my wrist! I had not struck it, and was simply standing still when I looked down and noticed the watch face hanging off. While trying to press it back into place (I hadn't realized it had cracked and broken off, I thought it just detached), it cracked. The watch is still under warranty, and I brought it in to an authorized Apple service provider (Geek Squad at local Best Buy), and the man there dismissed me after barely even looking at the watch, saying that Apple would not cover the damage to the screen. I then went online with Apple chat, and got the same answer. Basically, even though I still have a warranty, they are both saying that without Apple Care they won't cover the damage.

After reading several threads here, it sounds like this can occur if the battery expands.

 

My watch happened to do this while I was literally in the middle of Hurricane Irma, and I'm wondering if the significant change in pressure could have caused the battery to expand, or somehow caused the watch face to burst off.

 

Looking for answers, and any recommended next steps with Apple, as I am certain that I did not cause or contribute to this issue, and believe this was due to some kind of manufacturing defect or defect with this particular watch.

Contact Apple Support again (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to arrange for your Apple Watch to be inspected and to establish your available service options:
