Using Clipboard

I have material in Clipboard that I want to move to a Favorites file entitled, "News Checkers." How do I do that?

Open the file "News Checkers".  Click to position your cursor where you want the material to go. Press command-v (⌘-v or paste from the edit menu).

Also:  "News Checkers" must be a file you can edit (using, for example, TextEdit, Word, Pages, etc.).

That doesn't work for me. I have the material in Clipboard and in Notes, but I can't transfer it to the open  Favorites' News Checkers file. I tried to move it into the open Favorites file by using Command and V, and Copy and Paste, but it wouldn't go. Is there a third way?

Well, I must have copied from somewhere into Notes by using Copy and Paste. Isn't that good enough? How about copying it into TextEdit or Pages? Would that make a difference?

I just tried to move it from Notes to Pages by using Copy and Paste. I couldn't do it. So I guess my question must be" how do I get it from Notes to someplace I can use to transfer it to Favorites? Or, what should I do to the material in Notes or Clipboard to transfer it to Favorites?
