MacBook Pro stuck installing OS X Yosemite

I just bought this late 2011 MacBook Pro and wanted to update it to the latest OS. But it sat overnight and is stuck saying "Running Package Scripts..." and the cursor is the spinning pinwheel. 

Any idea what I should do?

shut down

disconnect all external devices

reset the smc

boot into safe mode

run the installer again

if you can't safe boot you will need to boot into recovery mode and try to repair the drive or if all else fails restore they system with a clean install of the OS the laptop shipped with from recovery mode.

Hopefully you made a backup before you decided to upgrade.
