Desktop icon problems … again!

Firstly, and not the issue I started out to deal with:

When I opened the "About this mac" pop-up panel, to obtain information for this post, I found I could not select any of the text so as to simply copy & paste it. Is this normal? If so, 'strike one' … for a system that has long been touted as 'intuitive' & 'user friendly', this is a glaring anomaly.

So, entered by manually typing (and hopefully without error): I am using an "iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)", running "macOS Sierra, Version 10.12.6 (16G29)".

For some time now my desktop icons have randomly failed to display the appropriate thumbnail image. For example: the Time Machine sometimes does not display relevant graphic - showing instead a generic, yellow drive-image; Photo file icons frequently do not show a thumbnail of the image; document files (PDF, RTF, ODT etc.) display only the generic icon for their particular type.

All advice I can find suggests, locate the "com.apple.finder.plist' entry in ~/Library/Preferences and delete it. Look as I may I cannot find that item - whether I search using Finder or do it manually. However, in an effort to do so, I activated the 'show hidden files' facility - "Shift/Command/." This revealed a desktop crowded with ".IMG" & "IMG … .tmp …" icons. I have no idea how they got there and, at this stage I am not prepared to try and remove them.

What is going on? I have frequently run the Disk Utility app - as accessed in the "Utilities" folder. How do I correct the situation and prevent it from happening again?
