Can my stolen iPad be unlocked and used even if...

My sons iPad wifi only device was stolen.  It does have a passcode to unlock on and I've placed it as lost or stolen using find my iPhone app.  My question is can the thieves still erase and unlock the iPad?  I have found my serial # for it.  Is there a way to be notified if the iPad matching the serial # is activated with another username?

The serial# won’t be of any help. But whomever stole the iPad will not be able to use it. Sad thing is, he/she will probably try to sell it on eBay or Craig’s list to an unsuspecting buyer.
