my screen is dark but the computer is on

I just purchased a space grey Macbook Pro 2017 15in 3.1ghz 1 tb. I opened it, I saw a progress bar but now the screen is dark. The computer is on because when I click buttons I hear the bump sound and the touch bar is lit. What is the issue?

There are anecdotes of a possible bug where initially the screen is dark, but the computer is on.

The reports are that the computer requires the whole-disk encryption password to light up the screen. After that one instance, it seems to be fine.
