Apple mail:  message has no content

I use a Macbook Air running MacOS Sierra, version 10.12.6.  Recently, about 10% of my incoming messages on Apple Mail have started coming in showing only the heading and the message "this message has no content". I do not see any pattern in which ones have no content and which ones are fully available. I can access the full messages on my iPhone, but not on the laptop.  I've read several explanations of the problem on various help sites but do not understand them.  Can someone provide a simple straightforward solution to this problem, short of ditching Apple Mail. Thank you.
