Airdrop Only Works When VPN Active

I have an interesting situation. My iPhone 6 (8.1.2) can't see my MPB 13"(10.10.1) unless I initiate a VPN connection to an outside provider. Then, everything works fine. Even without an active VPN session, my iPhone 6 CAN airdrop files to my wife's MBP 15"(10.10.1).

It seems to be a problem with my MBP since the iPhone can airdrop files to my wife's laptop regardless of VPN connections, but I can't make sense of it.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

That's strange - My problem is the precise opposite of yours. I cannot use Airdrop when connected to VPN on the MacBook Pro. I spoke with the VPN helpdesk this morning and they told me that was just an unavoidable sacrifice if you use VPN service. I am going to try to connect my phone to the iPhone VPN app and see if that works, but they said it's unlikely.
