Suddenly cannot send SMS messages from my iPad

Hi I do hope someone can help me. I have always been able to send SMS messages from my iPad using wifi, to friends who do not have iPhones. Suddenly this has stopped and instead when I enter their contact details they turn red and the message is that they are not registered to iMessages. I recently changed my Apple ID password and was asked to login when I used Messages after that so could that have caused a problem? It still works OK on my iPhone but perhaps that is going through my cellphone provider and not wifi. Also seems ok when I respond to a message already on my iPad.
