Digital sound via HDMI through AV receiver

I have got a Mac Mini (late 2014) which is connected to a Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver using HDMI. The receiver is connected to a Sony KD-55X8505B TV using yet another HDMI.

When playing movies using VLC, Dolby Digital 5.1 and other digital sound formats works fine (dependent on the codec on the movie itself). But when using Spotify or showing YouTube videos directly from Safari I am only able to get sound through the two front speakers. Not even the sub woofer works. Since I am using rather small speakers (KEF eggs), this doesn't present a very good quality sound.

I can see in System Preferences – Sound tab – Sound Out that the only HDMI choice I have is "Sony TV *02" - there is no choice for the AV Receiver!? I suspect this is part of the problem as I have found others stating approximately the same thing when trying to google this, although no answer or solution is yet found...

If I connect my MacBook Pro using the same HDMI connection, exactly the same thing happens. Using a Windows PC though, everything just works!

Anybody experiencing the same thing? Any solutions on this problem? I would be sooo grateful for your input regarding this. Thanks.

Best regards

Jan
