Problems after installing a new SSD in my 2011 ...

My Lion 10.7.5 OS no longer supported browser and other software, my 500GB HD was >95% full, all was slow on my mid 2011 Macbook Pro. I swapped my 4GB Ram for 8GB Ram and replaced my HD with a 1TB SSD drive. Everything seemed to be working fine until I tried to install Sierra. It downloaded the OS but then did not seem to do anything else. My OS remained 10.7.5 and there was no Sierra in my Downloads or in my AppStore Purchases. When I searched for Sierra in the AppStore the Sierra icon that appeared had a drop down box with INSTALLED displayed. I couldn't download it anymore. I also tried getting El Capitan but nothing happened there either.

While troubleshooting this problem I started the Macbook Pro in Safe mode. Everything looked the same EXCEPT in Finder > All My Files none of my files appeared. (When logging in normally All My Files are all there.)

Have I made errors in swapping out the HD? How can I troubleshoot this?
