Messages.app high CPU usage in Sierra

Ever since upgrading to Sierra last week, I have been having constant issues with Messages using abnormally high amounts of CPU. The app behaves fine when I first launch it, but after a couple hours I'll start to hear my 5K iMac's fans spin up (something that only ever happens when I'm encoding video or playing a game), and Activity Monitor shows Messages.app using 90-100% CPU. This happens regardless of what is being displayed in the app or whether or not I am actively using it. Closing and relaunching it fixes the issue for an hour or two, but inevitably I'll hear the fans spin up again, and the process repeats. I thought maybe it was getting hung up on an inline video preview or sticker, but even after deleting all of my conversations and starting fresh, it still happens. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi,

Check the Contacts app is only syncing with one service.

Whilst the link to Messages is in the background it will delay Messages and may cause this behaviour.

If it is only using one service then check the My Card is your details.

  iMac 2.5Ghz i5 2011 (El Capitan)
 G4/1GhzDual MDD (Leopard 10.5.8)
 MacBookPro 2Gb (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
 Mac OS X (10.6.8),
 iPhone and an iPad (2)

I think the problem referes to the new messages effects using iOS 10. My MacBook Pro switches to the discrete GPU when a message contains one of these new effects and uses the discrete GPU until i close the messages app manually.

I thought that might be the case, but I tried deleting all of my conversations and starting fresh, and still ran into the same problem even though all of the messages after that point were plain text.

Also, the 10.12.1 update yesterday did not fix the issue.

Looks like it is related to the fact that we are syncing Contacts from a Google account to the Mac (https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/40lus7/messages_and_address_book_app _constantly_freezes/).

Apple, please advise since not being able to sync your Google account(s) Contacts to a Mac is unacceptable if you are using Google mail & contacts at your daily job.

Hi,

Apple will not comment here.

The Various Communities (Forums) are designed to be User to User based help.

There are Hosts (Moderators) who ensure the rules are obeyed and Community Specialists who are supposed to pick up on posts that have not had an answer in a certain time (it's about 24 hours in most Communities but can be one a Post drops off the Front page in fast moving ones)

The Contacts  issue is actually when you are using two or more accounts to sync.

See Contacts app > Preferences > Accounts

IF there are multiples in use then the App constantly cycles round and round each list to see if there are changes.

As it can never know when there are changes it will not stop.

One option as in the reddit thread is to Disable the choice to sync Contacts in System Preferences > Internet account (It can also be done in the Contacts Settings).

I have not tried it but you could also try setting the Check time in the Contacts app. "Automatic" seems to mean "Constantly"

Here to confirm that this issue was resolved with unselecting iCloud in the contacts app on my mac.  It's pretty frustrating that something this menial was able to bog down my computer's performance so much.  In order to get my contacts in properly I had to export Vcards from all of my contact sources.  (iCloud, Exchange, Google, etc.)

I've been using my mac for the past 6 months (who knows, maybe even longer) at almost half performance due to this bug.  I just assumed that my computer was getting old.

So happy with the giant bump in performance, but continually getting more and more frustrated with Mac's negligence.

Their new business model that leaves older products by the wayside is loosing me as a long time loyal customer.

Can confirm. Unselected contacts in iCloud and usage went from 95% to nothing. Why is this such a CPU heavy task?

Visual of me NOT running Messages. Turning Messages on, and then stopping iCloud contacts after...

I am pretty new to Mac. I had like 104% of CPU shown, but then realizing I also had it connected to 4 Google accounts. Now after I disconnected the Google accounts from Message, only leaving iCloud, its all fine and I get below 1% for the Messages App.

I am curious if you guys all had big iMessage databases or a large number of conversations going. Anybody? My database is about 20gb with probably 200 conversations.
