Is it possible to NOT use iCloud to sync my cal...

I'm currently using Sierra 10.12.6 on my MacBook pro.

I've been having a lot of trouble syncing my calendar to my iPhone SE.  It hasn't worked in a while.  Mostly, I can sync from my MacBook to my iPhone but sync does not work from iPhone to MacBook. 

I've gone through many discussions and forums and tried many things but it still doesn't work.  Hence, I've almost given up.  I do NOT want to use iCloud and will go back to just inputting between the two manually.

On the phone you can turn Settings > [username] > iCloud > Calendars off.

On the MacBook you can turn Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Calendar off.

I'm not signed into iCloud on my phone and iCloud is turned off on my MacBook.
