Updating an iPod

I have an ipod touch that is ios 4.2.1. Can I update it to the current ios? I need to download an app  but cannot because it does not have the latest upgrade.

No. Your iPod probably can’t be updated past 4.2.1, and definitely can’t be updated past 6.1.6.
