Finding Better Playlists

I have a hard time finding music I enjoy on Apple Music and iTunes. I feel as if the playlists are all centered around current music or specific time periods. So I can find today's hits and I can find alternative hits from--say--1991. But I have a very difficult time finding music that transcends time periods. To borrow the tagline from a local radio station, what I'm looking for is the "hits from the 80s, 90s, yesterday, and today." Any ideas on how to find this kind of selection?
