Macbook Target Mode Thunderbolt Question

I'm trying to transfer harddrive data from an old macbook to a new one using target mode and a thunderbolt cable. The new macbook can't seem to find the old macbook when they are connected, and I'm wondering if its because I'm using the wrong kind of cable.

The thunderbolt cable I'm using is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073NCQ4NY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UT F8&psc=1

Is the cable the problem, or could it be something else?

Hi,

That is indeed the wrong cable. It is a Mini-DisplayPort cable meant for displays. You need a Thunderbolt cable such as this: Amazon.com: Apple Thunderbolt Cable, 0.5-Meter (MD862LL/A): Computers & Accessories
