What is difference between Apple USB

I’ve got both to use with new MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016).

I’ve read the Apple page on using the USB ports and adapters. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204360. And other sites on all that can do with USB-C. But can’t find anything on when a cable that connects is sufficient or when an “adapter” is necessary.

Are there situations where the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter must be used, and the USB-C to USB cable will not work or is incorrect?
