icloud mail account no longer works on Mac Pro

After years of having my icloud.com mail account set up in Apple Mail on my early 2008 Mac Pro, it suddenly stopped accepting my password and does not work. I tried deleting the account and setting it up manually as originally done, but it says it doesn't accept my password (which I know is correct). What is the solution to this?

Mac Pro early 2008, OS 10.6.8

You need to enable 2 Factor Authentication on your Apple ID and create an app specific password to use. If your account won’t allow 2 Factor Authentication, try 2 step verification. The change was only supposed to affect 3rd party e-mail programs, but others have posted the same problem when using older OS versions of Mail and Calendar.

Thank you Eric.

My question:

"You need to enable 2 Factor Authentication on your Apple ID and create an app specific password to use"

Is the app to which you refer my Apple Mail account on my Mac Pro hard drive?

Not clear how to apply this to my Mail account when setting up the iCloud email account on it.

I have tried to manually set up the iCloud account on Apple Mail using specific steps outlined in another forum post, but it fails every time.

You are welcome. I was referring to the iCloud e-mail address account.
