How is an apple watch going to help me day to day?

As a senior in high school I constantly find myself looking at the clock checking the time and responding to texts. I recently had the idea of getting an apple watch. However, it occurred to me that maybe I just feel like I want one and that when I buy it its not going to help me much more than telling me the time and the weather and read me some texts. All of that I can do with a Fitbit. So rises the question, how is an apple watch going to help me day to day in a way that other cheaper devices can't, and due to my lack of knowledge, will getting only the GPS version have a major impact on the usefulness of the device?
