Thanks much, I had to go as far as step 2 and then Safari started working perfectly again. THANKS!!

I have exactly the same issue. I have tried all steps to get safari to open, but it's just a dead app icon. I have tried to follow your suggested steps, but I've search the caches folder etc and there is no file com.apple.safari.plist to remove/put back, it's as if the app does not exist??

The option I have now is to go through the whole annoying process of restoring from time machine, unless you have any other advice??

Thanks in advance.
