Can I use one external hdd for both backup and ...

Hello,

I have a Macbook Air from 2016 and I would like to know if I can use only one hdd for both backup and storage? Or do I need a second hdd for the extra storage? I use a Toshiba hdd 2tb Canvio Premium for Mac. Allready Thank's

Technically yes.  But if you care about the storage information, then it is not being protected.

You would partition the external drive with part for backup and part for storage.

The problem is that if the external disk fails, you the side you are using as storage is not backed up anywhere, so it will be lost.

If you need external storage, then it would be better to have an external disk for storage, and an external disk large enough to backup BOTH the Macbook Air AND the storage disk.  Then the Macbook Air and the external storage would be backed up.

Now if you are really paranoid about backing up your data, then you would take a 3-2-1 backup approach

• 3 copies of your data (all your data).  The original copy of any data is the 1st copy
• 2 different backups, using 2 different backup utilities, going to 2 different backup devices.  This protects you from a single device failure and any bugs that might be in one of the backup utilities
• 1 of the copies stored off-site.  This protects against theft and natural disasters (fire, flood, earthquake, hurricanes, etc...)

The really paranoid, use RAID based storage systems, and have extra backups for the most critical data.

I must agree with Bob that while it is possible to do that it is strongly recommend that you don't do it. With all of the problem the storage of data and backup on a single disk create, such as the inability of the data to be backed up, the problems the data cause for the backup software, I see that solution as a false economy. It will probably end costing you far more then the extra disk drive would cost.
