Old DVDs not playing

Hi, I have some DVDs that I have had for many years. They are self "burned" and I have kept them safe and in good condition as they contain digitised copyies of old family Super 8 movies I had transfered a few years ago. As such they are personally very valuable to me. IN this day and age I decided that even safer would be to store them online. To my horror, they now show up on my iMac as blank, as if they have nothing on them. This is not the case as I have played them many times in the past.
My Disk drive works, I still use it to play audio CDs, but admit i have not used the DVD software (if its even there any more, did it get removed in a "update"? (ha ha,, vert rarely is an update an improvement in my opinion).

How can I...?
a) find out if the files within are OK, and
b) get them off.
