Disk Utilities is stuck! I tried to verify my disk, it is verifying volume of my USB stick. A window pops up saying "Disk needs to be repaired. Click repair disk." I clicked 'OK' the window never went away. I have been clicking like crazy. Help!
JMichel0305,
which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of OS X is installed on it?
It is the new retina diplay Macbook pro 13 inch. 10.8.5 OSX
JMichel0305,
did you run Disk Utility from Recovery mode, or from your usual user account?
Usual user account.
JMichel0305,
try running it from Recovery mode. To do so, restart your MacBook Pro, and hold down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. When the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility, and verify (and possibly repair) your disk from there. When it finishes, exit Disk Utility, and select Restart from the Apple menu to get back into normal mode.
The program is prohibiting me from restarting my computer.
JMichel0305,
which program is prohibiting you from restarting your computer? (If necessary, you can force it to shut down by holding down the power button for 10 seconds or so.)
The force shut down worked. Thank you very much for your assistance!
Hello--I have the same problem. I performed all the above in the untilies window once and no repairs were needed. Now I just did it again, and one repair was needed .. I finished that and it said it was successful.
I closed the unitlies screen and it asked me to restart. I said restart. Now I am back to a white screen.....ugh
now back to blinking file......please tell me what this means???
Blinking folder alternating with question mark means your Mac cannot find a bootable device at the address recorded as the preferred Startup disk. This can mean the disk has problems, but it is just as likely no device (or the wrong device) is specified.
Restart and hold the Alt/Option key. You Mac will rediscover every possible potentially-bootable device from scratch, a process that can take several minutes. If the device you want appears, select it and tell it to proceed.
To avoid being back here soon, use:
system preferences > Startup Disk to deliberately set the startup disk to be used next time.
Thank you for responding. I really appreciate it. Can you tell me what my start-up disk is usually? I don't know much about this stuff. I remember seing two options available in the disk repair window : Macintosh HD or Disk 1: Mac OS X Base System.
Which one shall I choose as a default?
(by the way nothing has been changed by me at all and this just started happening randomly....is my computer needing some sort of service??)
