Mirroring in Sierra without Apple TV?

I recently updated my OS on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro to Sierra and now I can't stream the computer screen to my flat screen TV using an HDMI cable connected to the mini display port on the mac. It worked fine before upgrading the software. Did Apple just take this functionality away with Sierra? I've looked everywhere and can't find an answer. And I DO NOT have Apple TV.

Is there anyone out there that can give me an answer?

PLEASE???

Thanks,

Steve

If you go into System Preferences->Displays, does your TV appear as a screen there?

Have you tried unplugging the cable and plugging it back in?

AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV

Hi. Thanks for the info but I don't own AirPlay. Is that something you have to purchase? I have my MacBook Pro running Sierra and I can't stream the laptop screen to the my TV. That's the issue. On previous OS versions I was able to mirror the computer screen to the TV but it seems that Sierra has gotten rid of that function.

Any ideas?

Connecting to a tv over HDMI works in Sierra, of course. It also has nothing to do with Airplay, and there is no need for extra software.

Does the tv show up at all in System Preferences->Displays? Did you select the correct input in the tv? Tried another cable or removing and reinserting the cable as was already suggested?

in display you can click gather windows if the tv's resolution is set to something it does not support and that makes it display black screen

in the eyes of the mac the tv is just like any other extra monitor connected to the computer it can mirror the primary display or it can act as an extra desktop

Luis,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried all these things except for replacing the cable which I will try next. But I think it's odd that the Mirroring icon does not appear in the menu bar at all when I go to Preferences then Displays and check the box at the bottom that says "show mirroring options in the menu bar..." (The TV does not show up in Displays when I connect to either of the 2 HDMI slots on the TV.) When I check the mirroring box in Displays the other icons move to the left for an instant as if they are making room for the mirroring icon and then move back to the right.

It all worked fine before when I had the older OS's. And I've read a bunch of stuff online that says the mirroring doesn't work in the new Safari OS on my mid 2010 MacBook pro. Really confusing for me.

But I'll try the new cable and see if that works.

First, I would make sure to select the appropriate input on the tv before connecting to your mac.

Second, I would try creating a new user account and checking if the behavior is the same on the new account.

I have this same issue.  I have just set up my Macbook running a fully patched Sierra install.  I just plugged in a new monitor, fresh software there as well.  I see nothing under the Display Preferences screen, no mention of the monitor what so ever.  It's connected via HDMI over the 3 port Apple manufactured connector. There is no Appletv or airplay at the office.  Both of those functions work fine at home.  The issue is with Sierra and connecting to video devices when there is no Apple utility available.  I agree, this was working fine in previous versions of iOS, and needs to be restored.  This is a bug and needs to be reported as such.  This will be slowing down my work productivity.

I'm sure there are hundreds of customers out there who have given up with this issue and don't know where to report it.

Please  help your customer base.

Loyal but frustrated,

Erci Stern
