WD Mybook Randomly Disconnects

I'm using a 2017 non-touchbar Macbook Pro, connected to a Caldigit TS3 Thunderbolt 3 dock. I have my WD Mybook 3TB external hard disk connected to the dock via USB3. The external drive has it's own power adapter and supply.

When working on the computer I am constantly getting the message "xxx disk not disconnected / ejected properly". It happens often, like every 5 minutes. If I do not click "close" these messages start stacking on top of each other in the top right of the desktop. Sometimes the drive will stay on the desktop following the message, and other times it will disappear as if it were physically disconnected.

I have been using this drive for years with no issues on my old PC, so it's not the drive. It would be quite the coincidence if the drive or it's power supply / adapter started going bad exactly when I switched over to Mac, so please don't blame the drive itself.

I have messed with all of the "Energy Preferences", like prevent the drive from sleeping, etc. with no success. I have also tried downloading the WD drive preferences that allow you to specify the drive to NEVER sleep.

As a last resort I downloaded and installed "Keep Drives Spinning" and set it to the WD Mybook but that does not work either.

What I suspect is happening is the external HDD spins down when not in use, and MacOS does not handle / communicate with the drive's controller correctly and thinks the drive has been disconnected. Windows obviously communicates with the controller correctly as this was never a problem in Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10.

MacOS has essentially rendered the external HD unusable until I can find a solution. Please help!

Perhaps it is the Dock. Try directly connecting the drive and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion Barney. I would but I do not have a USB-B to USB-c adapter to use; one of the reasons I purchased the dock was to avoid buying dongles / adapters. However in battling a different problem (display not waking from sleep) this is actually the third dock I have tried (the others being the Caldigit USB-C dock and the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express HD dock) and this issue was occurring on all of them.

Is the Dock powered?

Yes it is, it has it's own power adapter and it is plugged in to it's own outlet.

Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try running First Aid.

mine did that, and then it began to not always being able to spin up when turned on

I ended up taking the internal wd hd out of the enclosure and put it in another where it worked fine, so it was the wd enclosure power-supply which was bad.

Any other suggestions?
