loud fan sound/hot computer

My daughter, who is away at college, is telling me her MacBook Air is making a loud fan sound and is getting hot. Does anyone know if this is indicative of any specific problem? Should we be shopping for a new computer, or are there things to try first?

It's a mid-2011 MacBook Air

OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

Without knowing what types of applications she is running on her MacBook Air, it would be hard to diagnose the problem.

One option, at this point, is to have her run the Activity Monitor app to find out what is using most of the CPU time.

To do so:

  • Go to /Applications/Utilities.
  • Run Activity Monitor
  • Select the CPU tab
  • Look for processes that have values of 25+ in the "% CPU" column. These would indicate applications or processes that are using a significant amount of the CPU.

Let us know what she finds...

Also, you posted this issue in the MacBook area of the ASC. I will ask the forum Host to relocate it to the MacBook Air area.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll pass this along.

And I had a **** of a time finding a MacBook area let alone a MacBook Air area. I did think I was in the Air area but things kept shifting on me for some reason. Anyway, thanks for rerouting this.

No problem. You did just fine. I just want to be sure that the post gets the attention it deserves to help you/your daughter to a solution as quickly as possible.

After she runs Activity Monitor let us know the results.
