My imac starts typing by itself it usually star...

My imac starts typing by itself it usually starts in safari and if I open any other program it will continue in that. It also continuously toggles rapidly between items in the lists of drop down menus. Other weird stuff happening too like if I put it to sleep and re-login it will delete any text I try to put in the password box.

If I shutdown fully it seems to be fine for quite a while but then it eventually starts doing it again.

Hi...

Might be a good time to check the startup disk.

Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities

Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.

Click Verify Disk. If necessary, click Repair Disk.

Put a new set of Alkaline barreries into your keyboard.

Select your keyboard in your Bluetooth menu and deselect the profile. ( minus button)

Re-pair your keyboard to your Bluetooth.

Hi

I tried the Verify Disc Utility and it says that the HD seems to be Ok

I am using a wired keyboard.

Do you have another keyboard you could try?

I don't have a spare keyboard but I don't think it is the problem as it still does it when the keyboard is unplugged.

Also I turned the imac on this morning and could hear the HD clicking which is worrying. I have backed up.

I have exactly the same issue...

Even when my hardwired keyboard is unplugged the number 6 types itself endlessly.

The menu's toggle too just like the original poster's

I used the time machine to back a couple of days and that worked for 3 days and now it's back but this time the time machine didnt' work.

Any suggestions welcomed as essentially I cannot use my mac at all in it's current condition.

Thanks

Sorry I lost track of your thread, is your problem resolved?

I think trying a

SMC RESET

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
  • Wait 15 seconds.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
  • The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

and the

PRAM RESET

Zap the PRAM

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

I also have this problem. The thing is that I found out that a virus called "Word" not sure if that's correct, takes control of your keyboard and will continually type //////// on my computer. It doesn't matter how many keyboards you use this virus takes over immediately, starting before even getting the password window up. I would say it is the startup operating system which has been hacked and that apple are not even aware that this virus exists....... hence the "try ano keyboard!!!

How do do I know..... cos I bought new keyboards, changed batteries, checked prefs, disk first aI'd and even wiped my computer reinstalling a new operating system only to find that my MacBook was still typing by itself.

This is not a hardware problem it is a software problem that Mac are not dealing with.
