victim of itunes gift card scam for $8500, next...

Hi ,

        Today I became victim of itunes gift card scam , some imposter pretended to be US police department and asked money to stop from imprisonment. Started with small amounts , but ended up with $8500 at the end. All gift cards were purchased with cash / debit cards and looks like all of them are redeemed. I have filed police complaint in local police department .Wanted to know if anyone has prior experience with this and what should be next steps to recover money ?

I don't fully understand the scam but it would appear it was a continuous process and the fault will be put down to yours.   As far as the lost money is concerned you can only hope the miscreant is caught and a judge in court orders the repayment from the thief's own funds.
