external hard drive refusing to format on my mac

I have tried all of the answers I have found on here about how to format my WD Elements hard disk. It has never been used, tried it on the PC to make sure it worked and it's fine. I have tried to erase and format and I have tried to partition it. Every time it gets half way through the loading bar and just stays that way. I literally left it for 24 hours and still no... I need to timemachine my mac so I can update it! Any help majorly appreciated.

Formatting a drive should be easy. If you are sure you've chosen the uppermost icon (the whole drive) and erased, it should format in a matter of seconds and create a GUID volume. The correct format being Mac OS (Extended). If that isn't happening, I'd assume there is a problem with the disk.

Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture - Apple Support

(Although it says for Aperture, this is true for all reformatting)

Thanks that's exactly what I've done! It's so frustrating. I read somewhere to plug it into the PC to check it is not corrupt and I formatted it on the PC and when I plugged it back into mac the timemachine popped up for the first time but then said it needed to be erased. I followed the prompts and it still just took ages and didn't move past half way!

If it is a new drive try returning it to WD.
