Upgrade to Sierra from Mountain Lion

Hi,

I'm pretty green with this stuff so please be gentle! I may not be the most techy person ever, but I can however follow instructions pretty well as long as they are in layman's terms

I am currently running a 15-inch, mid 2010 MBP,

Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB

Software:  OS X 10.8.5

I upgraded my hard drive to a 1TB SATA Disc in 2013 due to my old one failing. I need to upgrade my MBP OS as I am finding new tech like my iPhone 7, browsers like Chrome etc.. are not compatible with 10.8. I did an upgrade to Mavericks when it came out a few years ago however that caused my machine to seriously over heat and slow down dramatically, so i reverted back to Mountain Lion. I am thinking of upgrading to Sierra but am worried about my MBP slowing down, losing data, over heating, totally failing etc.. I should add that my machine does tend to reboot randomly now again which I can only put down to age! I use my MBP mainly for surfing, MS Office, Downloading, DJing and sometimes making music in Logic.

Please advise on the best may to move forward on a machine of this age with minimal risk?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice, it's much appreciated.

Let's start to say that your computer is supported: How to get macOS Sierra - Apple Support

Now to be honest with you: if you have been unsatisfied with Mavericks I bet that you'll get the same experience with macOS Sierra. If you want to upgrade the OS, I suggest to double the RAM (8Gb) and put an SSD.

Thanks getangar, I've thought about doing that. Is there any particular SSD you would recommend for my machine?

When I needed to upgrade "old" computers, I used with satisfaction both Intel & Samsung

Ok so found this RAM and SSD

Or should i go for a better known brand like Intel or Samsung?

And just to clarify doing this will turn my sluggish old goat into a super dooper spring lamb?

Absolutely! Excellent choices!

Crucial and OWC (Macsales.com) have the best compatible RAM and their SSDs are excellent.

Great, thanks...

I'll get on it right away

Quick question...

Could I upgrade the RAM now in order to upgrade my OS and install an SSD later or is it better to do both at the same time?

Thanks

Well ... you can do it of course ... but then you lose time in re-installing your stuff (in case you can't clone your disk).

Ok so just to end this thread..

I installed a Crucial SSD and upgraded my Ram to 8gb using Crucial. I then updated my OS from Mountain Lion to Sierra. My Mac is now seriously rapido!

I did this painlessly by using Carbon Copy Cloner, a hard drive enclosure and a torx screwdriver set!

I do however still have a problem with my Mac where it randomly restarts when i try to do some tasks.. I will start a new thread for that.

Thanks guys thus far for all your help.
