macOS Sierra 10.12 5

I updated to macOS Sierra 10.12 5 on my iMac, late 2013.

It is now extremely slow. I get the spinning colored wheel constantly. Windows won't close in Safari for a few minutes, opening mail is the same.

I have 826.09 GB free space on a 1 TB iMac.

What's going on? Any pointers on how to fix this? Sierra over all has been slow but this is ridiculous. As I am typing this, I get the spinning wheel in between words! Help!

Yes, please post the EtreCheck output.  EtreCheck has been invaluable in finding performance issues for users seeking help in these forums.

Be sure to back up your Mac if you have not done so already, because the symptoms you describe may presage hard disk drive failure.

I see some "questionable" stuff. Recently I deleted  "surfby" as well as "my-soft-update" and "optiby" as I found those when looking to see if anything happened to my iMac. I'd been getting annoying pop ups from Yahoo, stating that I had to update. I never had this problem before and ignored the yahoo pop up. It was persistent and at times the only way to log out of it was to shut down my machine.

Could these left over files have been the problem? When I ran disk first aid it said I had "corrupt files" and it took care of them. (or so I thought when I re-ran disk first aid on the HD and the HHD.  Thank you.

I've allowed EtreCheck to delete those files. Then I ran EtreCheck again. All is good now, and performance went from "good" to "Excellent".

No more "red" files showing. No more beach ball. Thank you.

But, could you shed light as to where these files came from? I'd already deleted "Surfbuy" "OptiBuy" and the third one - whatever it is called. I get that the stray .plist files were left behind. (and henceforth deleted now with your app.)

How is it that these files originated to my machine in the first place? Apparently it was "adware". It also began when I'd started seeing that annoying Yahoo "update" thing which I also deleted.

Adware tricks you into installing it.  I've seen situations where you want do download something, and the adware places a banner Ad on the same page, with a big (huge) Green button that says download.  Since you expect to download something and there is this button that says download, you click it and the rest is history (my computer professional Wife did, so anyone could).

Or you let a family member (or a friend) use your computer, and they downloaded something.

That's interesting to know. Now I don't feel so bad because I do not allow anyone to use my computer.

While I'm careful when I download (which is rare itself!)- I now learned something new and for that, I thank you.

To be honest, I was nervous to download the EtreCheck app! But seeing that I've seen you and Mr. Galt around on the forum here, (and your good reputations) I took a chance there. I'm glad I did. What a great app.

Usualy adware comes attached to some other "bait" software you installed.

Keep an eye on the performance. EtreCheck only reports system performance and that might not include problems that you would only experience while interacting with apps. Plus, your original performance wasn't that and such measurements aren't very accurate. Unfortunately, iMacs with mechanical hard drives can just be slow.

Well, FWIW, my iMac is no longer showing that spinning rainbow ball, nor is it  freezing or getting stuck. And the speed is back.

I have exactly the same issue in exactly the same hardware. It's impossible to use the iMac, now.

Is there any way of reinstalling 10.12.4?

Since the steps taken by rockeeeeeee solved his/her problem, why don't you try doing them yourself.

Otherwise, I suggest you not thread-jack rockeeeeeee's post and start a new Post of your own (see the "Post" button at the top of this page).

When you start a new Post, please provide a description of your problem.  If you want to link back to this page, that is fine.

I would also suggest you post a copy of the EtreCheck output in your New Post, just like rockeeeeeee did

EtreCheck is a tool that helps Apple Support Community volunteers debug problems without any access to the troubled computers. Debugging problems can be a difficult task even when the machine is in front of you. Attempting it via a discussion forum is extremely difficult. EtreCheck has been a great help.
