How can I back up my macbook pro to a Western D...

Hi!

My MacBook Pro, has been under performing recently. After some discussions with Apple Support, I removed a user to free up hard disc space. Since removing the other user and their data, my MacBook has performed better. Apple Support suggested I should do a full back up of my MacBook to an external harddisc/drive, then wipe clean my MacBook and the do a re-installation of Mac os Sierra, followed by moving data from external disc back to the MacBook.

Foolishly I have never done a back up and have no clue how to do this. This is where i need some guidance. I am terrified of doing a back up incase I do something wrong and I lose all my data.

I purchased a while ago a Western Digital 8TB external disc which is supposed to represent "a private cloud device". This has never worked in the way it was sold into me. My OS devices would automatically update and back up to the WD Cloud device. I can't sync the OS devices.

But let's take one thing at a time. Please help me to perform a pain-free back up.
