Is there a way to use a 2008 iMac as a second d...

Someone offered me an ol' iMac to use as a second display considering I'm a struggling student. However, I quickly realized that there's no easy way of connecting the two. Some people had mentioned an app or software that could connect them, but I can't seem to find anything on it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If that's not applicable any suggestions on a good display, similar to a thunderbolt display--for a decent price would be appreciated as well!

Unfortunately no there is not. Your question is fairly common however it simply will not work as the 2008 is too old. Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news however Apple is VERY clear on which iMacs will work and what cabling is needed in Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

My recommendation is to get an external display to use with your MBP which I know isn't what you wanted to hear but that is your best solution. As there are hundreds available that will work it's difficult to suggest one as we wouldn't know the features you would want it to have.

I figured that was the case, thank you for the clarification!

I'm just looking for a larger screen with Retina display. I do a lot of graphics and photography so like having a bigger monitor to look over work, compare it and so on.
