If anyone has a solution please let me no I'm stumped.

Hello 9to5Apple,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you have been having difficulties with your AirPods and your Apple Watch not working properly. I recommend connecting your AirPods to your iPhone and seeing if the issue with your Apple Watch persists. The following article has more information about connecting the AirPods to your Apple Watch:

Use Bluetooth accessories with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Connect to your AirPods

When you set up AirPods with your iPhone, they're simultaneously connected to both your Apple Watch and iPhone, and they play sound automatically from either device. Learn how to set up AirPods and how to play music on your Apple Watch

Best Regards.

I have the same issue.  The Airpods sometimes to connect right away to my watch; but other times, they don't.  When they dont sync/connect, I typically have to power cycle my Apple Watch for them to work.  (I don't like the process of re-pairing my Airpods and I should not have to.

Both the Apple Watch and the airpods are great but they often dont work well together which is surprising to me.  I am also surprised Apple has not been able to fix this.

I also have this same issue. It's definitely an Apple Watch connection issue as my AirPods connect perfectly with everything else. The only solution I have found is to de-link the AirPods Bluetooth via the iPhone and then reconnect again.

I'm not going through that every time as defeats the purpose. So, hoping Apple can fix this issue quickly.

I am experiencing the same issue.  However, it looks like from the link to the article above, that quite possibly I was just not getting the Air Pods connected correctly.

I have been leaving my iPhone 7+ in the car when at the gym, and then would try to get the Air Pods connected to the Apple Watch Series 2 after I was in the gym.  I would have to power down the Watch, then power it back on. Then the Air Pods would connect like they are supposed to.

Will try a test, and next time before leaving the car, will connect the Air Pods to the iPhone 1st, and that way they will simultaneously be connected to the Watch.

Then will go into the gym to do my workouts listening to music using the Watch and Air Pods.  If this takes care of my issue, will update here and let you know.

Ok, the test does not work. I have iPhone turned on and connect the Air Pods, and then try to connect the Watch Series 2 to the Air Pods and frequently get this message:

"Connection Failed. Make sure that "Brian's AirPods" is turned on and in range."

Tried this in my house, so now I have to power down the watch, power up the watch and the Air Pods will connect.

Will call Apple Care to report this issue and hopefully Apple can get this bug/issue resolved with the next update.

I Also have problem with this.

My solution is that whenever i want to connect AW to my airpods, first I have to turn off bluetooth on my iphone. Then AW will connect with the airpods.

I think the problem is that airpods cant connect with iphone and the apple watch at the same times.

Hi I have cleared this issue completely via Apple support- it required forgetting the AirPods off all devices - resetting the AirPods check on line for the process and then reconnecting the AirPods to the phone first. I can now switch between songs on a playlist on the phone and watch and the headphones switch automatically. To note once reset the headphone symbol is always on the phone it just states in the details being used on Apple watch.

This worked for me!

The key for me was holding down the button on the back of the AP case for 10-15 seconds, until an amber light blinks. Once done, 'Forget Device' on all devices, then re-pair through iPhone using the iCloud method (as advertised by Apple, where you simply open the lid of the AP case, and wait for the 'Connect' sheet to appear on the phone).

Afterward, no connection issues!

I appreciate the advice above and did un-pair the Air Pods from all devices, then re-paired with the iPhone. Apple Watch Series 2 is connected to the iPhone, and Air Pods are connected to iPhone, however, the Watch is not automatically paired.

Here is the message I get when I open the Music App on the Watch:

"Pair a Bluetooth headset to listen to music on your Apple Watch"   Click on Settings.

I'm going to do this, but seems like since I'm already connected to iPhone and iPhone is connected to the Watch, that I shouldn't have to go through the step of now pairing the Air Pods to the Watch......since I do use iCloud for Mac, iPad, & iPhone.

Will let you know if after pairing if the original issue of having to power down the Apple Watch every time I want to use the Air Pods goes away.......if not, Apple employees NEED to start wearing the Watch and testing the connection to the Air Pods as I described above.

Update: So I called Apple Care (which is one of the features of Apple I absolutely love):

And, so far everything is working correctly between AirPods and iPhone and Watch.   After un-pairing everything as Dmello described above, and then pairing to the iPhone, I did need to also pair to the Watch through Settings - Bluetooth, but once that connection was made, it appears as if everything is working like it should.

Apple Engineers; Still test this all out and make the instructions perfectly clear to the Customer - a lot of complicated things going on here but you NEED/WANT to have a User Friendly experience.

Will monitor and provide feedback if connection issues remain.   Thank you Michael Whitted at Apple Care for your thoroughness in trying to help me resolve this issue. The Apple Watch Series 2 and AirPods are Awesome!

Thanks.

Don't get too comfortable.  In my experience, this lasts a week, then it's a mess again.  No idea what causes the break.

This annoys me to no end.  One of the main reasons I purchased the AirPods was to listen to music when I didn't want to carry my iPhone/iPad around.  When it works, it's awesome, but every week or so it doesn't work.  I am already tired of the unpairing and repairing nonsense.  I am going on vacation next week and will be really annoyed if I can't leave my phone in the safe and listen via my series 2 watch!!!!!

Please apple engineers work on this for us!

to add, after happily paired for a week and using watch on it's own with AirPods, i'm back where I was 10 days ago.  Watch doesn't think my AirPods are in range.  Even pressing the button on the case doesn't work.  The only thing that works is the unpair from all devices and starting again.  Grr.

Hey, I think after updating both my iphone and AW to latest ios and watch os. The problem is resolved. Now I can connect my airpods with my phone and my AW without any hiccups.

Powering off the iPhone worked without the reboot hassle. the iPhone seems to over ride the connecting in my experience
