Macbook stuck on blank screen and large cursor ...

My macbook is a late 2010 pro model. I went to connect it to our Apple TV via airplay but the display has since been stuck with only an oversized cursor (that changes to a text one when I move it to a certain part of the screen), and a small white dot. The borders of the screen have been squared off, as in I move the cursor towards the edge and it doesn't reach all the way.

Shutting the lid and opening it again doesn't change anything. Pressing escape will make the screen black for about thirty seconds and then nothing changes. I'd rather leave shutting it down to a last resort because I've got an important Pages document that I'm not sure how long ago was saved and if it successfully auto saved.
