Recording to MBP from iPad 3

I have an iPad 3, 64G, with thunder cable.  I'd like to record the screen on this unit like I do with my other models.

I use an MBP, running Sierra, and QuickTime with my lightning cable based units; they all work just fine.  However, when I plug in the iPad 3...no such luck.  QT doesn't even know it's there.

iTunes sees it and can interact with it just fine, I've accepted the trust on both the MBP and the iPad.  I've read mixed reviews on recording from older iPad devices; some say it can't be done using anything but a lightning cable while others say it can but provide no information as to how.

I'm not above picking up a different piece of software to run on my MBP, if one exists.  Before I spend any money on a solution, though, I wanted to hit up the collective to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Movie recording works with your built-in camera and many external cameras. If you're using OS X Yosemite or later, you can also record the screen of any iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) with a Lightning port and iOS 8 or later.

I am already aware of this limitation of QuickTime.  That's why I've posted to the forums; I am looking for alternatives,

Both iPad 2 and 3 have Wireless AirPlay ability to a Mac

You could look at something like Reflector 2 or AirServer that runs on a Mac and will let you record the iPad's screen from the Mac using QuickTime or another screen recording app.

I use AirServer with my iPad 2 and iPad Pro.
