MacBook Air screen turning black

My laptop screen will turn almost completely black if I dim the screen to anything lower than the brightest option. The same thing happens whenever it is plugged into a power source.

It is so dark that there is barely anything visible on the screen unless I am in a very dark room and even then it isn't lit well enough to be functional.
