Must you own a iphone to own an apple watch series 3?  I would like to upgrade my kids apple watch from series 2 to series  3, but will like to take away their phones. Can they do necessary software updates on the watch or on their desktop if they don't own a phone?

Apple Watch Series 3 requires a compatible iPhone, including on an ongoing basis for access to many features.

Updates cannot be installed on the watch or via a desktop.

• Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) requires an iPhone 5s or newer with iOS 11 or newer.
• Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 11 or newer.
