Mail problems auto reply with out the rule. Why...

How is there a rule to auto reply when I'm not available when i didn't set one up. Ive seen this is a big problem and no answer from Mac. I tried to go through support yet i need to pay 30 bucks for any help or try to get an exception and none of the options fit me. Ive used mac since 2007 and never looked back yet no loyalty. Thanks. I wonder how many more mac users have the same or other issues and no help.
