MacBook Pro that has a faulty display

Hello all,

I have a MacBook Pro with a faulty display. As soon as I open it, the screen turns white and I am not able to do anything with it. Apart from the display, the Mac is still working. I would like to kindly ask you guys if I can connect my Mac to an external monitor to be able to do a backup and save all my data. Could you kindly help me with some advice please?
