Unable to locate files to recover on iCloud.com

I recently disabled iCloud Drive on my Macbook Pro to stop the annoying "iCloud is full, buy more storage" messages that kept popping up. I don't really use iCloud so didn't see the need for it to be enabled any more. After I did this, all the files from my desktop and Documents folder were gone. I logged into iCloud.com and went to the Advanced settings to recover my files but there were none listed in there. Where did all these files go?

I had a lot of data and there is no trace of it anywhere. Is there anyway whatsoever to recover these. It has not been longer than a day since this has happened.

Have you looked for the iCloud Drive archive folder in your home folder?

I have. It only shows the root folders of some that used to be synced before with nothing in them. I logged out and back into iCloud on the Mac with hopes that the files would reappear, but that has not done anything either. I just can't understand why all the files would be permanently removed and deleted from local.
