Transfer raw files to my ipad and then to exter...

Hi, I'm going on a trip and I'd like to transfer large raw photo files from my camera and back them up to an external (1TB) harddrive so I can make back up copies and clear my SD card. I want to do this using my iPad Air.

Can anyone tell me how I can do this?  I believe if I use wireless I will not get full sized files onto the ipad and if I haven't backed up full sized files I won't be able to clear the SD card. 

It's a pretty simple process when travelling with a small tablet or my mac - but I'd rather just travel with my ipad. Any suggestions?
